|A month ago, I had the pleasure of playing on a ropes course. The last part of the course was the zipline which I was very much looking forward to doing. This zipline was unlike others I had gone on before- I’ve zipped over canyons, dry beds, malls…all to my pleasure. This one however, was a small zipline where you zigzag between 2 posts than were maybe 50 feet apart. I watched as 2 friends went before me. They were both freaked out so by time I got there, I started picking up on their energy. As I sat on the platform, I began panicking. This wasn’t a course where you stood and jumped. On this course, you sat and jumped. I just couldn’t do it.
“Push me,” I said.
“No we can’t do that. You need to jump.”
I froze. It was so unlike me to panic, but here I was panicking. Logically, I knew I wasn’t going to die, I was triple harnessed in. Besides, there were people controlling the ropes, easing the jumpers down. So what was my problem?
I looked to my friend who was on the platform with me. “Mark, I need you to support me. I don’t know if I can do this,” I said.
“Don’t worry. I gotcha Mar.” And although I believed him, I still couldn’t jump.
As I sat there, I realized that I only had 2 options. Either I went forward and jumped, or backward and retreated down the ropes, but sitting in my fear wasn’t an option. Ultimately, I chose to deal with my fear.
And then on the count of 3, I jumped from a sitting position. It was terrifying! But as soon as I finished, I wanted to do it again. I wanted to push through my fear again, and to hopefully prove to myself, it wouldn’t have been as hard on the second try. But I didn’t get the chance to prove it either way.
So, now I ask you. Where in life do you choose to just sit in your fear and not take action, either forward or backward? Where do you just sit and ruminate, waiting for circumstances to change? The only way your circumstances can change is when you take action. And your action will determine the change(s) you can expect.
So when the moment comes, will you jump? Will you take the risk and jump? Or will you wait for some miracle to happen?
I challenge you- think about the biggest, hairiest most bodacious fear that you have- and then choose to do it. Let me know how it turns out. And if you can’t do it, consider having a session with me so that we can release your fear, your worry, your pain- what ever it is that stops you. Because ultimately, I know you are bigger and more powerful than your fear. This I know to be true- and if you are willing, I can get you to see that too.
